Item Details.

A sunny piece of Provençal charm — this vintage French majolica pitcher brings the warmth and character of the South of France straight to your shelf or table.

Crafted in the classic mid-century Provençal style, the jug is glazed in a rich deep yellow and decorated with hand-painted green and black trees. The star of the piece is a beautifully detailed three-dimensional cigale (cicada) applied to the front — the iconic symbol of good luck, warmth and long summer days in Provence. A tradition popularised by artist Louis Sicard from 1895, the high-relief ceramic cicada became the defining motif of Provençal tableware and remains one of the most sought-after decorative details in French regional pottery today.

A black rim accent at the base of the design adds a bold finishing touch, and the front is hand-inscribed with “Vaison-la-Romaine” — the historic town in south-eastern France renowned for its extensive Roman ruins and rich Provençal culture. Pitchers like this were hand-painted and sold locally to travellers visiting the region during the mid-century tourism boom of the 1950s–1970s, reflecting the style of the famous pottery centres of Vallauris and the Louis Sicard studio in Aubagne.

Practical as well as decorative, it works beautifully as a water or cream jug on the table, a vase for a small posy, or simply as a vibrant accent piece in a country kitchen or dining room.
