Vintage Watcombe Torquay Motto Ware Cream Jug – “Bustle is not industry”, Cottage Pattern

A delightful piece of authentic English folk pottery — this vintage Watcombe Torquay motto ware cream jug likely dates from the interwar period (circa 1920s–1930s) and is a lovely example of the collectible Cottage Pattern in excellent vintage condition.

The hand-painted decoration features a rustic country cottage with stylised green trees, a blue polka-dot rim border and a classic dark green scrollwork band. On the reverse, the motto reads: “Bustle is not industry” — a less common and wonderfully thought-provoking proverb adapted from Seneca, reminding us that looking busy is not the same as being truly productive.

Crafted from local Devon red terracotta clay and finished with hand-painted slipware decoration, the base carries the original Watcombe factory ink backstamp — “Watcombe” above a square frame enclosing “Devon Motto Ware” — confirming its authenticity.

A beautiful addition to a Torquay Pottery collection, or a charming standalone piece for a country kitchen dresser or shelf.
